I can understand David Newman's vicious venom against right-wing Jewish bodies ( On Jewish ambassadors Jerusalem Post, May 2, 2001). It is not easy to accept that one's ideals have proved catastrophically wrong and are now viewed as such by the large majority of Jews the world over. The promoters of the Oslo agreements recognized the PLO terror organization as a legitimate partner for political dialogue, armed it, financed it and determinedly ignored its insistence on "peace terms" putting an end to Israel's existence as a Jewish state. They even condoned its blatant infractions of the Oslo agreements themselves. And among the "promoters of Oslo" I include, at the risk of being called despicable, not only the leaders of the Israel Labor Party and Meretz but also President Clinton, Dan Kurtzer and Martin Indyk.

The Oslo mentality in Israel, always ready with concessions and excuses for the enemy, resulted in the ruthless terrorism of the Al-Aqsa intifada (financed with the help of Israeli and EU money) and steadily increasing disloyalty among Israeli Arabs. The Oslo mentality in the United States is responsible for the betrayal of the Christian Lebanese to Syria and the flourishing of Islamic fundamentalism the world over. It now threatens not only Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon or Algeria but even Uzbekistan. Israel has every reason to be grateful to the United States for its help on many occasions, especially for crucial diplomatic support when we were isolated in the UN. But it has no reason to accept as US ambassador here a person who misunderstood the nature and goals of the PLO, adopted its cause as his own and helped to bring the disaster of Oslo upon us.

David Newman writes: "It would, of course, be unthinkable were the American government to appoint a Moslem or Arab American as ambassador to Israel..." I can think of few better suited for the post than Joseph Farah, an Arab American, who is Editor of WorldNetDaily.com where he has a daily column. A recent one contains this: "Probably more than any other State Department official, Kurtzer has been instrumental in promoting the goals of the Palestinians and in raising their grievances to the center of the US policymaking agenda.... It's time for a change. It's not time to repeat the mistakes of the past three administrations."
