Summary of report on Yemen moves in the Horn of Africa

The Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh has stressed that the tripartite Yemen-Ethiopia-Sudan coalition is open to all countries and that it is not directed against anyone. He says it will be concerned with fighting terrorism and will promote peace. Saleh was speaking to the Ethiopian and Yemeni mass media before his return to Sanaa after an official visit to Addis Ababa. He was satisfied with the results of his visit to Ethiopia, noting that it will improve relations and open up prospects of large-scale cooperation serving the common interests of the Yemeni and Ethiopian people.

Replying to a question on Yemen-Eritrea relations, Saleh explained that what had happened between Yemen and Eritrea was had also happened between Ethiopia and Eritrea. He called on all "to benefit from the lessons of the past and not to repeat what had happened." He affirmed the need of these neighboring states for cooperation and good relations among them. On the other hand, he stressed an agreement between Yemen and Ethiopia to fight terrorism and ensure security and stability in the Horn of Africa area, and in particular restoring peace and stability in Somalia.

In a speech to the Ethiopian parliament Saleh said: "Security unrest in Somalia causes great problems for our two countries, and we support restoring national unity and solidarity in Somalia and establishing a strong central state that enhances social peace in this brotherly country." He indicated the agreement of Yemen and Ethiopia to implement international resolutions concerning the Arab- Israeli conflict and the foundation of a Palestinian state on the national Palestinian soil with Jerusalem as a capital.

Concerning the situation in Iraq, the Yemeni President said: "Meanwhile Iraq constitutes the area of world interest. We hope that Iraq will maintain stability and choose its leadership of its own free will. We are looking forward for the withdrawal of the occupation forces as soon as possible."

Saleh indicated that Ethiopia and Yemen have common goals - freedom, democracy and development. He added "we follow with interest what is happening place in Ethiopia and the steps it taken to deepen and consolidate its national unity, stability and development." He called for the formation of a parliamentary friendship committee between the two countries. His talks with the Ethiopian Prime Minister and President dealt with trade, political and economic relations and cooperation in various fields.
