Summary of report

The U.A.E. has expressed anxiety over the latest statements of US Secretary of State Colin Powell, regarding them as a blatant violation of international legitimacy, which views Jerusalem as part of the Arab territories occupied in 1967. U.A.E. Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Sheikh Hamdan Ben Zayeid al-Nahyan summoned the US Ambassador in Abu-Dhabi to the Foreign Ministry demanding a clarification of these statements, which are considered a clear bias favoring Israeli aggression against the Palestinian people, from the US Government. Powell's position would deny credibility to the United States as an honest broker for the peace process. The Arabs expect the US to be neutral, because it initiated and sponsored a peace process based on UN resolutions and the land for peace principle in Madrid in 1991.

Meanwhile, the UAE daily Al-Ittihad warned that Ariel Sharon may commit aggression against the Palestinian people, utilizing the support of the new US administration, which torpedoed the principles of peace by declaring Jerusalem the capital of Israel.

Note: It seems that any recognition of Israeli rights in Palestine "torpedoes the principles of peace" in Arab eyes. Legally, the PLO has no right to any part of Palestine except for the areas Israel has already ceded under the Oslo pact.
