Summary of report by Tser Vanger

The victims of the recent ethnic crisis in Taraba and Benue states continue to count their losses. The immediate cause of the present crisis, as in the past, is the imminent registration of voters for the next general elections. The NKST Church in Benue State, an arm of the Dutch Reformed Church of South Africa, announced that 255 of its members perished during the three weeks of mayhem. Armed soldiers who invaded Zaki-Biam in Benue State murdered one of its pastors, while 22 other clerics in the states of Benue, Nasarawa and Taraba were rendered homeless. The Church said that the ethnic riots had also caused it heavy financial losses, as most of its members could no longer afford to pay their dues. Some NKST pastors were robbed of their vehicles while fleeing the conflict areas.

The Church also decried the acts of arson, most of which targeted centers of worship of the Roman Catholics and other Pentecostal churches, describing them as "warfare against God." While condemning alleged abductions and murders of soldiers, it took exception to the continued presence of the Army in Taraba State and Katsina-Ala in Benue State, as it had not stopped the killing of Tiv people along the highways in Taraba State. It called on the Federal Government to withdraw the soldiers from Katsina-Ala, claiming, "They have deviated from performing their legitimate duties and have become totally corrupt, extorting money from drivers plying the road." It also demanded adequate compensation for victims of the crisis, as well as the rebuilding of churches, clinics, schools and settlement areas of Tiv people that have been destroyed.
