Summary of report

Israeli occupation forces on Sunday kidnapped 40-year-old, Asa Hamdan, from Sheba town. Lebanese dailies published yesterday said the UN Interim Forces in Lebanon (UNIFIL) contacted the occupation forces, which confirmed the kidnap of Hamdan. ? Kidnapping is an Israeli practice targeting innocent citizens. Lebanese Parliament Member Qassem Hashem asserted that it is a violation of Lebanese sovereignty. ? Hashem called on the Lebanese Foreign Ministry to lodge a complaint with the UN Security Council to bring about Hamdan's release as soon as possible. ? The committee supporting the cause of Lebanese detainees in Israeli occupation jails called on the International Committee of the Red Cross to ensure his release.

Note: The UN left the Sheba area in Israel when Ehud Barak retreated from Lebanon, noting that Lebanon had no valid claim to it. Hezbollah has often attacked Israeli patrols there and once kidnapped three soldiers who were killed. Inhabitants of this area who cooperate with Hezbollah or deal in drugs are usually arrested and jailed. Since Hezbollah is recognized as a terrorist organization, the UN may not wish to involve itself in this.
