Lebanon, 1 March 2005 Summary of report A 33-year-old man, Mahmoud Youssef Kourani, has pleaded guilty to conspiracy to provide support to Hizbullah, which is designated as a foreign terrorist organization by Washington, the U.S. Justice Department said. The department said in a statement that Kourani entered the plea in a federal court in Detroit, Michigan, before District Judge Robert Cleland. Government prosecutors said Kourani organized and hosted meetings at his Dearborn, Michigan, residence during Ramadan of 2002. They claimed that during the meetings, a guest speaker from Lebanon solicited the participants to donate money to Hizbullah. "The money solicited by Kourani's conspiracy was intended to support Hizbullah's 'orphans of martyrs' program, benefiting the families of persons killed in Hizbullah terrorist operations or by Hizbullah's enemies. Combating terrorism is the number one priority of the Department of Justice, and this prosecution underscores our commitment to disrupt the funding of terrorist organizations," said US Attorney Craig Morford. Kourani is due to be sentenced on June 14. He faces a maximum penalty of five years in jail and a 250,000-dollar fine, to be followed by deportation to Lebanon.
