Iraq News Agency, Iraq, 17 February 2002
Summary of report from Baghdad

President Saddam Hussein met the Head of the Iraqi Atomic Energy Organization, Fadhil Moslem al-Janabi, as well as a group of its researchers and scientists of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research.

The meeting congratulated President Hussein on the advent of Holy Id el-Adha, praying to Allah to keep him to achieve the goals and ambitions of Iraqi people, the glorious Arab nation and all humanity.

President Hussein lauded the researchers' creative efforts, hailing their national and pan-Arab spirit that overcomes all hardships caused by the unjust sanctions. He said that armaments defend the country against the greed of foreigners and the evil factors in their souls, but declared that it is not Iraq's intention to manufacture weapons of destruction.

Iraq will use science to increase its knowledge, please the human being and adapt it to serve humanity.

Note: The probable reason for the meeting was Saddam Hussein's desire to ascertain whether any weapons of mass destruction would be available in the event of an attack on Iraq in the near future. The decision whether or not to use them would be his. Though in the past he has refrained from doing so, this is no guarantee of similar behavior should he feel his regime is threatened on this occasion.
