The United States has followed a double standard policy towards Afghanistan ever since the withdrawal of Soviet troops from there. There are two different attitudes towards the Taleban in the US. The CIA and some other American organizations believe that a Taleban Government in Afghanistan would be in the US interest. However, the State Department argues that even should Taleban control the whole country, it cannot establish the kind of Government the US would approve. So the United States is trying to pressure and isolate the Taleban while simultaneously aiding it.
Asked whether the US would support the Afghan northern alliance if it defeats Taleban, Mousavi said: "The European Union is trying to support the Afghan northern alliance as a deterrent force against the Taleban, but this stance is not shared by the United States. The fact is that in the 1980s the US officials did not favor Afghan President Burhanuddin Rabani and his military commander Ahmed Shah Masood. Thus the US can hardly trust the northern alliance."
