Daily Hot News, Pakistan, 18 June 2001 Summary of report
Afghanistan's ruling Taleban militia captured the Kalafgan road junction in the northern Takhar province two days ago in a campaign to subdue its opponents in the area. The Kalafgan junction leads to Badakhshan, the only province under the total control of the opposition. The Taleban control 95% of Afghan territory.
Note:
The emergence of the six-state Shanghai Cooperation Organization (see below) may herald serious trouble for the Taleban, especially as India and Iran are also hostile. Musharraf's desire to reach an agreement with India on Kashmir also bodes Taleban no good. Thus, Taleban's military successes within Afghanistan are of less strategic importance than in the past.
